Air India Announces Special Waiver Amid Nationwide Travel Crisis
In response to the severe travel disruptions caused by IndiGo’s operational breakdown, Air India has introduced a series of passenger-friendly measures designed to offer relief to travellers stranded across the country. On Saturday, the Tata Group-owned airline announced a special waiver allowing customers to change or cancel domestic bookings without penalty, provided the reservation was made on or before December 4 for travel scheduled up to December 15. Passengers can reschedule their flights without a rebooking fee or receive a full refund without cancellation charges, although fare differences may apply in case of date changes. The waiver is valid for modifications or cancellations made until December 8, 2025.
To prevent airfare spikes resulting from increased last-minute demand, Air India and its low-cost subsidiary Air India Express have also capped economy-class fares on direct domestic routes starting December 4. The move aims to counter automated surge pricing models that typically raise ticket rates during sudden peak demand caused by large-scale cancellations.
Both carriers have confirmed that they are implementing the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s latest directive on fare control measures. This comes after tens of thousands of passengers were left stranded at airports nationwide following IndiGo’s extensive cancellations over five consecutive days.
The initiative has been widely welcomed by affected travellers, many of whom have turned to alternative airlines or rail services due to uncertainty surrounding flight schedules. Industry analysts say Air India’s response demonstrates the airline’s attempt to position itself as a dependable full-service carrier ahead of its upcoming modernization plans.
As air travel remains unpredictable, Air India has advised passengers to check flight status regularly and utilise flexible booking options when possible. With the aviation sector under pressure, Air India’s intervention reflects the need for collaborative solutions across airlines to stabilise travel operations and restore passenger confidence.
