Germany Removes Airport Transit Visa Requirement for Indian Travellers
In a significant move for international travellers, Germany has officially removed the airport transit visa requirement for Indian nationals travelling through German airports to third-country destinations. The change came into effect on June 3, 2026, and is expected to benefit thousands of Indian passengers who transit through Germany each year.
The announcement was made by the German Embassy in India, which stated that Indian citizens will no longer need a special airport transit visa when changing flights at German airports on their way to another country. The decision was published in Germany’s Federal Law Gazette on June 2 and became effective the following day.
According to the embassy, the measure reflects Germany’s commitment to strengthening ties with India by facilitating easier movement of people and encouraging closer economic and cultural exchanges. The move is expected to simplify travel procedures for students, business professionals, tourists, and families who frequently use German airports as international transit hubs.
Officials noted that the policy change follows efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation between India and Germany. The embassy also linked the development to the growing partnership between the two nations and discussions held during recent high-level diplomatic engagements.
The announcement follows a similar step taken by France earlier this year. In April 2026, the French government implemented visa-free airport transit arrangements for Indian nationals travelling through mainland France by air.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs welcomed France’s decision, describing it as another example of strengthening people-to-people ties and facilitating smoother travel. The easing of transit requirements by both Germany and France is expected to make travel to North America, Europe, and other global destinations more convenient for Indian passengers.
For frequent international travellers, the removal of these transit visa requirements means fewer documents, reduced costs, and a more seamless travel experience across major European aviation hubs.
