Praggnanandhaa Creates History with Norway Chess Triumph
Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Indian player to win the prestigious Norway Chess title. The 20-year-old chess prodigy secured the crown after defeating Germany’s Vincent Keymer in the final round of the tournament.
Entering the last day in third place with 15 points, Praggnanandhaa needed a strong finish to stay in contention. He delivered under pressure, registering a classical victory that earned him three crucial points and took his tally to 18, enough to secure the championship. The victory marked a landmark achievement for Indian chess, as even legendary former world champion Viswanathan Anand had never won the tournament since its inception in 2013.
Praggnanandhaa’s journey to the title was far from straightforward. After a slow start in the six-player elite event, he gradually gained momentum and emerged as a serious contender during the latter stages. One of the highlights of his campaign was defeating world number one Magnus Carlsen twice in classical chess, a rare feat that showcased his growing confidence and maturity at the highest level.
The Indian star also benefited from results elsewhere. Tournament leader Wesley So was unable to secure a decisive victory against Alireza Firouzja, opening the door for Praggnanandhaa to overtake him in the standings.
As reigning world champion D Gukesh fell out of contention in the closing rounds, Praggnanandhaa carried India’s hopes and delivered a memorable triumph. The victory further strengthens India’s position as a global chess powerhouse and confirms Praggnanandhaa’s status as one of the brightest young talents in the game.
