Rain Denies Pakistan a Historic Victory Over England in Women’s World Cup Clash

Pakistan’s dream of securing their first-ever ODI win against England was cruelly washed away by relentless rain, as their ICC Women’s World Cup match at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo ended in a no-result. The outcome was particularly heartbreaking, as Pakistan appeared to be in complete control both with the ball and bat before the weather intervened.
Winning the toss in overcast conditions, captain Fatima Sana chose to field and immediately justified her decision with a sensational opening spell. She exploited the swing on offer brilliantly, dismantling England’s batting lineup with figures of 4 for 27. Diana Baig set the tone by dismissing Tammy Beaumont early, and Sana followed with the key wickets of Amy Jones, Heather Knight, and Nat Sciver-Brunt, reducing England to 39/4 in 6.4 overs.
Despite a brief 15-run partnership between Emma Lamb and Sophia Dunkley, Sadia Iqbal (2/16) struck twice in quick succession to leave England tottering at 79/7. Heavy rain halted play for nearly three hours, and the match was reduced to 31 overs per side. Upon resumption, England showed resilience through Charlie Dean (33) and Emily Arlott (21), who added a vital 46-run stand for the eighth wicket, guiding England to 133/9.
Under the DLS method, Pakistan’s revised target was 113 in 31 overs. Openers Muneeba Ali (9*) and Omaima Sohail (19*) made a confident start, reaching 34/0 in just 6.4 overs, putting Pakistan firmly on track for a historic win. However, rain returned and never relented, forcing the umpires to abandon the match.
This marks Pakistan’s third washout of the tournament, severely denting their semifinal hopes. While they share a point with England, the frustration is evident — a golden opportunity slipped away not due to performance, but to the weather.
