Asia Cup Trophy Row: BCCI Seeks Ouster of Pakistan Minister

The Asia Cup 2025 final between India and Pakistan in Dubai ended in controversy after India refused to accept the trophy from Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who is also chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). India defeated Pakistan by five wickets, but the post-match presentation descended into chaos.
The BCCI had informed ACC officials beforehand that Indian players would not receive the trophy from Naqvi, citing his anti-India stance. Naqvi has previously posted inflammatory remarks, including videos referencing alleged Pakistani victories against India. He also pushed for disciplinary action against Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav for supporting the Army after the Pahalgam terror attack.
As a result, when the Indian team gathered for the ceremony, they declined to approach the stage. Presentation host Simon Doull proceeded with sponsor awards but announced that India would not be collecting the main trophy. In a shocking move, Naqvi left the venue carrying the Asia Cup trophy, leaving players and fans stunned.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia strongly condemned the act, demanding the immediate return of the trophy and medals. He confirmed that BCCI will raise the issue at the ICC conference in November, seeking Naqvi’s removal from the ACC. Saikia stressed that while India respects the tournament, they cannot accept the trophy from a leader openly hostile towards the country.
Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha defended Naqvi’s move, saying it was his right as ACC chairman. However, the controversy has overshadowed India’s victory and raised questions about the future of India-Pakistan cricket ties.
The BCCI maintains that India will only engage with dignitaries who treat the sport with neutrality. This unprecedented standoff is likely to spark a larger debate on whether political rivalries should influence cricket ceremonies, especially in high-stakes tournaments like the Asia Cup.
