Gukesh Becomes Youngest World Chess Champion
India’s 18-year-old chess prodigy, D. Gukesh, made history by defeating China’s Ding Liren to become the youngest-ever World Chess Champion. The Chennai-born player clinched victory in a thrilling 14-game series in Singapore, winning 7.5 to 6.5.
Gukesh broke Garry Kasparov’s record, becoming the youngest champion in the sport's history, and is the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to claim the title.
The match’s dramatic conclusion came after Ding made a fatal blunder in the 14th game, losing his rook in a critical endgame. Gukesh remained composed, capitalized on the mistake, and sealed his place as the new king of chess.
Reflecting on his victory, Gukesh expressed gratitude, calling it a dream come true. “This is a miracle I’ve been working toward for over a decade,” he said, while also commending Ding’s resilience throughout the match.
