Nagarjuna Sagar Dam All Gates Opened!

2019 has seen floods in many states of India. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Assam, Bihar, Karnataka and Kerala are the worst hit. All the twenty-six gates of Nagarjuna Sagar Dam were opened to let the water out. After 2009, this is the first time that all the gates of the dam have been lifted.

A senior official for the irrigation department said, “Since the heavy inflows are likely to continue for some more days, people living along low-lying areas have been alerted”.

Till now, 3.60 lakh cusecs of water have been released from the Sagar dam. It has received 7.66 lakh cusecs of water from Srisailam reservoir. The current water level in the dam at 566 feet. The full reservoir capacity is 595 feet.

The gates of the dam have been opened after ten years. The water will go downstream to the Pulichintala project.

Last week, Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa, wrote two letters to Maharashtra and Telangana to ensure good coordination between the states along the Krishna basin. He urged Telangana to take precautionary measures as the state will release water from the dam.

As many as 200 people have died till now, due to floods and landslides, across the country.
