Paraglider Pilot Killed in Crash at Bir Billing, Authorities Order Probe and Suspend Flights
An experienced paraglider pilot lost his life after a tandem paraglider crashed shortly after take-off at the internationally renowned Bir Billing site in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district. The tragic incident occurred on Friday evening and has once again raised serious concerns over safety standards at adventure sports destinations.
According to officials and the Bir Billing Paragliding Association, the paraglider reportedly developed a technical malfunction moments after taking off from the Billing launch point. The aircraft lost balance mid-air and crashed near a road below the launch site. The pilot, identified as Mohan Singh, a resident of Barot in Mandi district, sustained critical injuries.
Local residents and rescue teams rushed to the spot and shifted both the pilot and the accompanying tourist to a nearby hospital. However, Singh succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. The tourist survived the crash and was reported to be out of danger after receiving first aid.
As a mark of respect, authorities and operators suspended all paragliding activities at Bir Billing for a day. A case has been registered, and an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the accident. Officials are examining whether the crash was due to technical failure, human error, or adverse weather conditions.
District Tourism Development Officer Vinay Kumar said that all documents related to the flight, including equipment records and pilot certification details, have been sought from marshals and technical advisors stationed at the site. “Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation report,” he said.
The incident has reignited debates on the need for stricter safety protocols, regular equipment inspections, and tighter monitoring of adventure sports operations to ensure tourist safety.
