Assam Floods Claim 17 Lives, 251 Crores Relief Fund Provided from Centre
Over 4.6 million have been affected in Assam, which is facing a serious flood situation. The water levels of the Brahmaputra river continue to rise and the situation has further worsened this week. Heavy rains have affected normal life terribly.
The death toll has reached 17 and over one lakh people have taken refuge in 226 relief camps in the state. Almost 90 percent of the Kaziranga National Park has been submerged. Looking at the gravity of the situation, the center released an aid of Rs 251.55 crore to the State Disaster Response Fund for 2019-2020.
Assam Finance Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on social media for the help. He said, “The aid would immensely help in relief operations and mitigating sufferings of the flood-affected people.”
Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, along with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananada Sonowal, made an aerial survey of Dibrugarh and Majuli.
15 National Disaster Response Force teams consisting of 380 personnel have been deployed to rescue people from flood-affected areas.
