In a crazy twist of fate, a beggar of Puri was found to be a B.Tech graduate. It was however not clear how a technical graduate ended up on the streets. He has turned out to be a diploma-holder in plastic engineering.
Girija Shankar Mishra, 51, who was found begging near the streets of Shree Jagannath Temple, had got into a fight with an auto-rickshaw driver that left both with bruises. Police interrupted in between and brought them to the police station and asked both to lodge a complaint. While the rickshaw-puller was unable to write his complaint, the beggar, to everyone’s surprise, lodged his complaint in English on his own and narrated how the fight had broken out.
The application was free of errors and after seeing his handwriting and the application, the police got curious to know his details. "During the interrogation, we came to know that Girija Shankar Mishra, is an engineer and his father was a retired DSP," a police officer said.
As per the sources, Mishra’s parents were both dead and he is from Bhubaneswar. He did his B.Sc and then completed his diploma from an engineering college. Later he had moved to Hyderabad. Police said, "We don’t know what is the reason behind him quitting his job in Hyderabad, coming to Puri, and start begging on streets”.
When asked why he had turned to begging, Mishra said, "It’s a personal matter. I worked with Milton company but quit the job following a dispute with the seniors. There are certain things that happened, which cannot be disclosed, but the scars remain forever." On Mishra’s request, the cops did not pursue the case.
As per the sources, Mishra spends the night under the open sky and had many times been seen reading newspapers. He hardly speaks and police suspect him to be mentally unstable.
