Cabinet approves 10 percent quota for EBC puts Opposition on the back foot
With an eye on the upper caste vote in the coming Lok Sabha elections, the meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Parliament House on Monday was short — lasting barely half an hour, but it included a monumental decision that will impact the lives and mobility of crores of Indians.
Cabinet decided to provide 10 percent quota in jobs and education for those in the general category whose family income is below Rs 8 lakhs per annum and own less than 5 acres of land.
The government is likely to bring a constitutional amendment bill in Parliament on Tuesday.
Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution will have to be amended for implementing the decision.
The sources said the proposed move will not disturb the existing 50 percent reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.
