Hindu Priest Attack Case: Quick action by US Authorities
Indian diplomats in the US have praised the US authorities for quick action in Hindu priest attack case. US Congresspersons Grace Meng and Tom Suozzi condemned the attack and expressed confidence that justice will be served.
Swami Harish Chander Puri, a Hindu priest, was attacked near a temple in Floral Park, New York, on 18th July. The attacker reportedly screamed, ‘This is my neighborhood’.
Swami Harish, who is a priest of Shiv Shakti Peeth Temple in Glen Oaks, suffered bruises and abrasions all over his body, including his face. The 52-year old stranger, identified as Sergio Gouveia, was arrested by the police in connection with the attack.
Sandeep Chakravarty, Consul General in New York, met with the priest on Sunday and inquired about his health. He informed this in his tweet. He also thanked the police for quick arrest and Meng and Suozzi for their support.
The incident is reported days after US President Donald Trump asked four congresswomen to back to where they came from.
