India’s apex court, Supreme Court is scheduled on 2nd of June to hear its plea seeking the decision on PIL filed by an individual named Namah India to be renamed as ‘Bharat’.
On 12 March 2016, the Supreme Court had dismissed a petition seeking renaming of India as Bharat. Reacting to the absurdity of the plea.
“The removal of the English name though appears symbolic, will instill a sense of pride in our own nationality, especially for the future generations to come. Infact, the word India being replaced with Bharat would justify the hard fought freedom by our ancestors,” the plea claimed.
Namah contended that the Union Government has failed to do away with the symbol of slavery by using the name ‘India’ instead of Bharat or Hindustan. He also pointed out to the many pleas which have sought the same and the government’s inaction to do so.
The petition was listed on Friday before a bench headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde, but it got deleted, as he was not available. The next hearing on the matter is scheduled on June 2 before a bench headed by the Chief Justice.
