Late-Night Joyrides and Pub Outings Turning Deadly in Hyderabad

Hyderabad has witnessed a disturbing trend where late-night joyrides, pub visits, and picnics are ending in fatal road accidents. Authorities report that most of these tragedies occur between 1 am and 3 am, with factors such as rash driving, fatigue, alcohol consumption, and peer pressure contributing significantly to the mishaps.
According to traffic police, young and often inexperienced drivers, under the influence of alcohol or fatigue, are losing control of vehicles during high-speed drives. In many cases, peer influence leads individuals to take risky decisions, such as driving when tired or intoxicated. The lack of strict enforcement during night hours has further exacerbated the situation.
To address this growing concern, police are proposing multiple measures including limiting post-midnight travel, setting up more alcohol checkpoints, and intensifying public awareness campaigns, especially among youth. These campaigns highlight the dangers of combining speed, alcohol, and fatigue. Educational institutions and corporate offices are also being targeted to spread this message.
Citizens have suggested that civic authorities identify high-risk road stretches and implement safety mechanisms like speed breakers, reflective signage, and better lighting. The public believes that the government must step up efforts to prevent such tragedies. A senior official noted that what begins as fun often ends in irreversible loss due to one lapse in judgment.
