US Space agency NASA has announced to open up its Space station for tourist services. It is expected that the facility will be made available for business ventures as well.
In its initiative, the agency plans to conduct missions for astronauts twice a year. The information was given out by Robyn Gatens, ISS Deputy Director, on behalf of NASA.
As a part of the new venture, private astronauts will be offered with permission for traveling to International Space Station (ISS) for a period of 30 days. The mission will be made available via US Spacecraft.
The mission has been announced by NASA with an aim to boost and commercialize the Space venture program. The statement was confirmed by Jeff DeWit (Chief Financial Officer) while addressing a PR in NY.
The services are expected to be available from 2020 onwards for private astronauts and the cost would be expected around USD 35,000 per night basis. For crew selection, NASA has made it clear that the authorities would be given away to the commercial entities and business organizations.
The same organization will also be responsible to ensure that each selected astronaut meets all criteria on medical grounds, as required. The initiative will be carried out by Boeing Company and Elon Musk’s Space X Company. These companies will be responsible for building a spacecraft that will be used by private astronauts.
As per the news, it is also obvious that Taxi-fare shall be collected by these companies on a private basis for transiting astronauts to and back from the Space station.
