New Zealand Shooter Smirks after Producing Court
The 28-year-old Brenton Harrison Tarrant, who is a main suspect in mass shootings at two New Zealand mosques on Friday that killed 49 people and injured many, was produced in court the next day.
Tarrant, a Australian citizen, was sent to a local court in Christchurch on murder charges and then sent to jail until he was taken to South Island city's High Court on April 5.
He was handcuffed, barefoot wearing a white prison suit. He didn’t speak a word but smirked while media taking his pictures during the court hearing.
Police said that his court-appointed lawyer made no application for bail or name suppression and so he was likely to face further charges.
Two Indians have died in the attacks and a third person is in critical condition, Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of AIMIM said.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, calling it as terrorism, said it was the worst attack in New Zealand.
She said the country's gun laws will be changed and made strict after the attack as Tarrant has obtained a "Category A" gun licenses in November 2017 and began purchasing 5 weapons used in the attack.
