All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has hit out at the central government over the Aadhaar authorities summoning a man in Hyderabad and asked him to prove his 'citizenship'.
Reacting to Aadhaar nodal agency clarification that notices to 127 people have nothing to do with citizenship, Owaisi accused the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) of bias and asked how many of the 127 listed are Muslim and Dalit.
Owaisi tweeted, "First, @UIDAI has no power to verify citizenship. It has few powers to look into some cases of Aadhaar being granted incorrectly (rules 27 & 28),"
Owaisi alleged that the UIDAI did not follow due procedure and abused its powers.
Following UIDAI's clarification that its Hyderabad office had sent notices to people for allegedly obtaining Aadhaar numbers on "false pretenses", Owaisi cited notice served to Md Sattar, which asked him to appear before the 'inquiry officer' (a deputy director of UIDAI) to prove all 'claims of citizenship'.
"The words used in the notice are verification of citizenship. So will UIDAI suspend the Deputy Director who issued this notice?" Owaisi asked.
The AIMIM chief alleged that the action was an example of the biased exercise of the powers.
