Pakistani women Aasia Bibi to get asylum in US ?
Aasia Bibi is in news these days as she has been persecuted, jailed and threatened in Pakistan and the only reason behind this is that she is a Christian staying in Pakistan.
Bibi has been acquitted in a blasphemy case. The blasphemy laws were earlier made by former military dictator Ziaul Haq in 1980s and a person convicted under these laws is given a death sentence.
Bibi, a mother of four, was arrested in 2009 for allegedly using derogatory words during a quarrel with Muslim women while working on a farm in Nankana Sahib area of Punjab province. The case was filed by a local prayer leader on the complaint of the Muslim women. Bibi was convicted in 2010 by the trial court and her death sentence was maintained by the Lahore High Court in 2014. The apex court overturned her conviction last year, sparking days of violent demonstrations led by hardline Islamist parties.
However, recently Pakistan court has decided to overturn Bibi's death sentence and to free her. However, she still faces threat from the radical Islamist leaders. The US government has decided to provide her asylum. A US lawmaker has introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives for the same.
Bibi had gained the attention of the media and the world only after the former governor of Pakistan's Punjab province Salman Taseer was killed for supporting her and talking against the blasphemy laws.
Post that event another Christian from Pakistan Shahbaz Bhatti, who spoke against the law was shot dead in Islamabad.
