Plasma Therapy Proves To Be A Success In India

The first patient to receive the plasma therapy test in a Delhi hospital has fully recovered and have been discharged.

The 49-year-old man had tested positive for COVID-19 on April 4 and was admitted to Max Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was put on ventilator support on April 8, the hospital added.

The patient showed no improvement and was asked to give plasma therapy on family’s request and was soon arranged for a donor to extract the plasma. A few days later, his condition improved and he was put off the ventilator. On Sunday morning, he was discharged from the hospital after testing negative for the virus.

Group medical director of Max Healthcare and senior director of the Institute of Internal Medicine Dr Sandeep Budhiraja said, “We can say that plasma therapy could have worked as a catalyst in speeding up his recovery”.

Plasma therapy has opened up new opportunities for the treatment of the virus and such technology will be highly useful in a country like India. Now, Government regulations should work towards making it more accessible for hospitals across the country to be able to use it.
