SC Discards Plea Of Citizenship
The ongoing Lok Sabha elections are so very close to an end with the results on 23rd May, the parties are asking the basic questions of Citizenships of the candidate.
A plea was filled by Dheli resident Jai Bhagwan Goyal and C P Tyagi, a petition seeking directions to the Centre and EC, to not allow Congress chief Rahul Gandhi from taking part in the Lok Sabha elections till allegations over his citizenship were resolved.
According to both the Dheli residents, as per section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1981, only Indian citizens are entitled to register a political party. And in a form along with the annual data of a UK-based company in 2005-06, it was allegedly mentioned that Gandhi is a British citizen.
However nationality and citizenship are two different aspects, just because Rahul Gandhi’s nationality was mentioned as British in the form it does not make him British citizen, thus saying the bench of the court headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi rejected the plea.
