Telangana Reels Under Intense Cold Wave Conditions

Telangana is experiencing an unusually harsh cold wave, with temperatures dipping significantly across several districts. On Tuesday morning, at least 13 locations recorded single-digit temperatures, marking one of the coldest spells of the season. The Telangana Development Planning Society reported that the state’s average minimum temperature fell to 12.9°C, a sharp drop from the normal 19.4°C for this time of year, indicating a drastic departure of -6.6°C. The average minimum temperature for November typically stands at 18.2°C.

Sirpur in Kumuram Bheem–Asifabad district recorded the lowest temperature at a bone-chilling 7°C, emerging as the coldest point in the state. Kohir in Sangareddy district followed closely at 7.1°C. Many other regions saw temperatures below 10°C—Sonala in Adilabad (7.7°C), Bantwaram in Vikarabad (8.1°C), Ibrahimpatnam in Rangareddy (8.2°C), Rudrangi in Rajanna Sircilla (8.4°C), Bibipet in Kamareddy (8.5°C), Rayapole in Siddipet (8.6°C), and Makloor in Nizamabad (8.9°C). Jagtial, Medak, Nirmal, and Mahabubnagar also reported temperatures between 9°C and 9.9°C.

Adilabad district recorded the lowest district-wide average of 10.4°C, while Vikarabad showed the highest negative departure at -7.3°C from normal levels. Within the GHMC limits, the University of Hyderabad area saw temperatures drop to 8.8°C. For comparison, the lowest temperature ever recorded in the region was 7°C in Moinabad in 2016.

The India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert on November 17, warning that the cold wave is likely to persist in isolated areas of Adilabad, Asifabad, Nirmal, Sangareddy, and Medak. In Hyderabad, minimum temperatures are expected to stay 2–3°C below average, with forecasted maximum and minimum temperatures hovering around 29°C and 14°C respectively.
