Trump-Modi G7 Meet Cancelled as Trump Cuts Visit Short Over Middle East Crisis

A potential bilateral meeting between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G7 summit was called off after Trump cut his trip short due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. The White House confirmed that Trump would leave Canada early, following a dinner with fellow leaders, to address the situation between Israel and Iran.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted on X, stating Trump had a productive summit day, having signed a major trade agreement with the UK and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. However, geopolitical concerns prompted his sudden departure.
Modi had just arrived in Calgary as the formal Heads of State dinner concluded. A meeting with Trump would have marked their first since recent terror attacks in Pahalgam and Trump's repeated claims of helping defuse Indo-Pak tensions through trade sanctions.
Despite Trump skipping the summit’s second day, he began his visit by meeting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, where discussions largely centered on trade. Trump was unusually conciliatory, even wearing a Canadian flag pin—despite previously suggesting Canada become America’s 51st state.
Trump also blamed former US President Obama and ex-Canadian PM Justin Trudeau for Russia’s suspension from the G8, though it occurred during PM Stephen Harper’s term. Meanwhile, Modi is expected to hold several bilateral meetings during the summit’s outreach session.
