“Because We Are Girls” Screening at Vancouver

The Documentary ‘Because We Are Girls’, was screened over the weekend in Vancity Theater, Vancouver. It is directed by Indian Canadian filmmaker Baljit Sangra. She explores the sensitive topic of sexual abuse suffered by young girls in their own house, by their own relative.
The story revolves around three brave Punjabi Canadian sisters - Jeeti, Kira and Sulakshna. They were sexually abused by an older relative in their childhood and now years later they want to seek justice and punish the culprit. They also want to set an example for their daughters.
The family lived in Williams Lake, British Columbia and were perfectly happy. The girls would laugh, dance, celebrate with their parents. But when the parents invited their extended family to live with them, things changed. Being in a conservative family who don’t speak about such things, the sisters silently suffered the abuse by their cousin.
The documentary also talks about expressing the turmoil and how to cope and deal with it. It was initially released on 2nd May 2019.
