Gujarat Semi-High-Speed Rail Project
Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the Union Cabinet’s approval of the Ahmedabad (Sarkhej)-Dholera semi-high-speed double rail line project, calling it a major step toward transforming India into a global hub for connectivity, manufacturing, and innovation. The ambitious railway project, estimated at Rs 20,667 crore, is expected to significantly strengthen Gujarat’s industrial and logistics infrastructure while generating large-scale employment opportunities across the region.
The proposed 134-kilometre rail corridor will connect Ahmedabad with the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) and the Greenfield Industrial Smart City, two of Gujarat’s most strategically important industrial zones. According to Shah, the project aligns closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader vision of modern infrastructure-led economic development. The rail line will also support the operation of Namo Bharat trains, ensuring faster and more efficient regional transport connectivity.
Shah highlighted that the project holds personal importance for him as it passes through his parliamentary constituency. He noted that the corridor would provide direct access to the Dholera International Airport and the Lothal National Maritime Heritage Complex, improving transportation networks and boosting tourism and trade potential in the region.
Apart from strengthening infrastructure, the government believes the project will attract manufacturing investments and help Gujarat emerge as a global logistics centre. Shah stated that thousands of jobs would be created during construction and operational phases, benefiting local communities and industries alike.
The Home Minister also welcomed the Cabinet’s decision to modernise Nagpur International Airport and appreciated the approval of a Rs 37,500 crore Surface Coal and Lignite Gasification scheme. He said the energy project would contribute to India’s economic growth, improve energy utilisation, and create nearly 50,000 employment opportunities nationwide.
