Trump Shares India Gate Image, Cites Vision for Massive Triumphal Arch in Washington DC
US President Donald Trump on Monday shared an image of New Delhi’s iconic India Gate on his social media platform, Truth Social, referring to it as a “beautiful triumphal arch” while reiterating his ambition to construct a monumental arch in Washington DC. Accompanying the image, Trump wrote, “India’s beautiful triumphal arch, our will be greatest of all,” drawing a symbolic parallel between the historic Indian landmark and his proposed American monument.
The post comes amid renewed momentum behind Trump’s plan to build a large-scale triumphal arch in the US capital to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026. According to a report by The Washington Post, the proposed structure—tentatively named the Independence Arch—is envisioned to rise approximately 250 feet, making it significantly taller than many of Washington’s most recognisable landmarks. By comparison, the White House stands at about 70 feet, while the Lincoln Memorial reaches nearly 100 feet.
The proposed site lies between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, a location that would dramatically alter the city’s skyline and establish the arch as a dominant visual feature of the capital. Trump has publicly endorsed the idea of building what he describes as the world’s largest triumphal arch, arguing that Washington deserves a monument reflecting America’s historical legacy and global stature.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said he wants the structure to be “the biggest one of all,” adding that the United States, as the world’s most powerful nation, should possess a landmark that symbolises its strength and endurance. He also noted that the idea of constructing such an arch has existed for over two centuries, positioning his proposal as the fulfilment of a long-held national vision.
