Vijay urges PM Modi to stop Mekedatu project
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi and submitted a memorandum highlighting several key issues affecting the state.
One of the major concerns raised was Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu dam project across the Cauvery River. Vijay urged the Prime Minister not to approve the project without the consent of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry, saying farmers in Tamil Nadu were deeply worried about water availability.
He argued that Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar announcing a bhoomi puja for the project violated the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award and Supreme Court directions. Vijay requested the Centre and the Jal Shakti Ministry not to grant approval to the project. He also sought clarification from the Union Home Ministry regarding the continued singing of Tamil Thai Vazhthu at the beginning of government events in Tamil Nadu.
Additionally, he requested the establishment of the Centre for Airborne Systems and the AMCA development centre in Tamil Nadu in coordination with DRDO. Vijay also raised the issue of Tamil Nadu fishermen being arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy and appealed for immediate intervention to secure their release and return of seized boats.
