Avani becomes the first female Indian paralympian to win two gold medals.
The amazing Avani Lekhara made history on Friday by winning the women's 10m air rifle (SH1) event here, making history as the first Indian woman to win two gold medals at the Paralympics. Her countrymate Mona Agarwal took home the bronze.
Avani, 22, who won gold in the Tokyo Paralympics three years ago, shot an incredible 249.7 to break her personal record of 249.6 established in the Japanese capital. Mona, who started shooting as a sport in 2022, took home the bronze with a score of 228.7.
Avani, a wheelchair-bound paraplegic who was paralyzed below the waist in a vehicle accident when she was eleven years old, became the nation's first female shooter to win medals in the sport at the Tokyo Paralympics in
Athletes in the SH1 category of shooting include those with impaired movement in their arms, lower trunk, legs, or none at all.
Avani, the reigning champion, finished second in the qualification round with a score of 625.8, trailing only Iryna Shchetnik, who set a new record with a score of 627.5.
In her first Paralympics, Mona, a two-time World Cup gold champion, shot 623.1 in the qualification round and placed fifth going into the final.
