Gautam Gambhir Appointed as Head Coach of Team India
After a month of speculation, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) announced on Tuesday that Gautam Gambhir will be the new head coach of Team India across all formats. Known for his headstrong and outspoken nature, Gambhir takes over from Rahul Dravid, who ended his tenure with a T20 World Cup win last month.
Gambhir, a former BJP MP from 2019 to 2024, stepped away from active politics before this year's Lok Sabha elections. He then mentored Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title, significantly boosting his chances of replacing Dravid. In the preceding two years, Gambhir had also guided Lucknow Super Giants to the IPL playoffs. The BCCI considers Gambhir an ideal choice due to his driven, no-nonsense approach.
Former India opener WV Raman was the only other candidate interviewed by the BCCI's cricket advisory committee (CAC). Gambhir will bring with him a support staff of his choice. The BCCI has thanked Dravid's support staff, including Paras Mhambrey, Vikram Rathour, and T. Dilip, and wished them luck in their future endeavors.
Gambhir expressed his excitement and honor in taking on the role, stating, "It is an absolute honor to serve my country again. I look forward to working closely with the BCCI, the support staff, and the players to achieve success in upcoming tournaments."
BCCI secretary Jay Shah welcomed Gambhir, highlighting his vast experience and clear vision for Team India. "Gautam has witnessed the evolving landscape of modern-day cricket up close. His experience and vision make him the ideal person to steer Indian cricket forward," Shah posted on social media.
Gambhir, India's top scorer in both the 2007 T20 World Cup final and 2011 ODI World Cup final, is known for his serious demeanor and commitment to winning. His leadership skills were evident during his tenure with KKR, where he led the team to two IPL titles.
