Hardik Pandya May Lose Mumbai Indians Captaincy
Mumbai Indians are reportedly considering major changes after a disappointing IPL 2026 season, including the possible removal of Hardik Pandya as captain. The team won only four out of 14 matches, finished ninth in the standings, and extended its title drought to six years.
According to reports, discussions are underway regarding Hardik’s future both as captain and as a player in the squad. Sources within the franchise claimed there were already signs during the season that the management was unhappy with the team’s direction under his leadership.
Concerns reportedly increased after Mumbai Indians failed to adapt to the modern aggressive T20 style shown by successful teams like Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad. The franchise also struggled in the Powerplay overs and lacked standout performers in batting and bowling statistics.
Hardik’s relationship with Mumbai Indians fans has remained complicated since he replaced Rohit Sharma as captain after returning from Gujarat Titans in 2024. Many supporters were unhappy with the leadership change, especially after Rohit had recently led India to the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
Although Mumbai showed slight improvement in 2025, the poor 2026 campaign has intensified pressure on the management to make major decisions before the next season.
