India Should Quit World Cup
Harbhajan Singh and Mohammad Azharuddin opined that India should not play Pakistan in the World Cup after the Pulwama attack. In fact, the two legends said that Indian should even consider not playing the World Cup as no cricket tournament could be bigger than the country.
Harbhajan Singh in a media interaction mentioned that "The simple thing is...What’s more important? Does the country come first or do Indian sports come first? First, let us sort out the other issues. World Cup is very small when it come s to the country. 40 people have lost their lives. Who is going to pay for that? We have to stand united with the country. Even if we don't play the 2019 World Cup, it won't matter. We are Indian first and here we are players. We are what we are because of this country. People live us because we play for India.”
Azharrudin supported the comments of Harbhajan saying, “If we are not playing Pakistan in bilateral series, we should not play them anywhere. I agree with Harbhajan, the World Cup cannot be bigger than the country. There was tension…there was the war on. We were scared the spectators would start fighting. When we won, the soldiers celebrated. If you play Pakistan, play everywhere. Otherwise, don't play them anywhere. ICC and BCCI should resolve this quickly.”
“The players have no issue between them. We have received a lot of love when we went to Pakistan. But the issue here is much bigger. This issue of terrorism needs to be resolved. But we need to address the bigger questions: why should our soldiers continue to die? Why should our people continue to die? “The armed forces sacrifice everything to protect us… it's not right to keep playing sports with Pakistan when our soldiers are dying,” Azharuddin added.
