Shreyas Iyer Recovering in Sydney After Rare Spleen Injury, Family Joins Him for Support
New Delhi: Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer’s family arrived in Sydney on Wednesday to be by his side as he continues to recover from a ruptured spleen and rib injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia.
The 30-year-old batter suffered a severe blow to his lower left rib cage last Saturday while attempting a difficult catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s delivery. He was immediately rushed to a Sydney hospital, where doctors detected internal bleeding caused by a laceration to his spleen.
In his first statement since the incident, Iyer expressed gratitude for the support he has received. “I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better every passing day. I’m deeply grateful for all the kind wishes and support—it truly means a lot to me,” he said on social media.
India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav described the injury as “rare,” quoting doctors and physiotherapists. “But rare things happen to rare talent. God is with him, and he will recover soon. We will take him along with us,” he added optimistically.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Tuesday that Iyer’s condition is now stable. “The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. A repeat scan on October 28 showed significant improvement,” the BCCI said in a statement.
The BCCI’s medical team, in coordination with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his recovery. Iyer remains under observation, but the latest reports suggest he is steadily regaining strength and is on the path to full recovery.
