Vinesh Phogat to Receive Olympic-Level Honors Despite Disqualification, Says Haryana CM
Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced on Thursday that wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified from the women’s 50 kg category final at the Paris Olympics due to a weigh-in issue, will still receive the same honors and rewards as an Olympic silver medalist. Despite the setback, Saini emphasized that Vinesh remains a champion in the eyes of the nation and has made India proud with her previous performances.
Saini expressed his support for Vinesh, stating, “The whole of India, including Haryana, stands with you. We believe in your ability to overcome this challenge and continue to bring pride to the nation.” The announcement came shortly after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann questioned the role of Vinesh’s support staff in the incident, highlighting the need for accountability at such a high level of competition.
The disqualification, which occurred just hours before what could have been a historic gold medal match for Vinesh, has led to widespread disappointment across the country. However, the Haryana government’s decision to honor her achievements underscores the respect and admiration she commands as one of India’s leading athletes.
