The heavy floods in East and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh made at least 6 mandals suffer. Over 70,000 people were affected by the floods in river Godavari, and 17,632 were shifted to relief camps. As 13.58 lakh cusecs of floodwaters flowed in, the second warning was signal issued at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowleswaram. About 7,500 cusecs were being let out into the delta canals and the rest into the Bay of Bengal.
Fortunately, no causalities have been reported in the flood-hit areas as the teams of the National Disaster Response Force reached out to the affected areas on time with food and other essentials. According to the State Disaster Management Authority, the road communication network is badly damaged and so the power supply has been cut for a few days.
According to the authority, overall, people in 280 villages in West and East Godavari districts were facing the worst situations caused by floods. The impact was more on East Godavari where 52,500 people were affected and the remaining 21,568 were from West Godavari. The famous Goshpada Kshetram on the banks of Godavari at Kovvuru was filled with water which made people unable to enter into it.
The water-level touched 29 meters at Polavaram dam construction site and the access to the project had been cut off as the main approach Kademma sluice bridge submerged. From the last five days, many villages under Devipatnam Mandal of East Godavari district has no power supply thus remained in darkness. People are drowning in water and are waiting for the boats to reach their homes.
