CM Vijay suspends police officers over insensitive behaviour
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay suspended three police personnel after a video showing officers laughing during a press conference went viral on social media. The press briefing was related to the shocking rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Sulur, Tamil Nadu.
The insensitive behaviour of the officers triggered widespread public anger and criticism online. Many people demanded strict action, saying police officials should show seriousness and empathy while addressing such tragic incidents.
The incident placed pressure on the state government and Chief Minister Vijay to take disciplinary action against the officers involved. The girl had gone missing on May 21 while playing near her home, and her body was later discovered near a pond. A post-mortem examination confirmed sexual assault. Police reportedly arrested the accused within 24 hours, and one suspect allegedly confessed to luring the child away with chocolates.
The brutal crime shocked people across Tamil Nadu, leading to calls for severe punishment for the accused. By suspending the officers, Vijay reinforced his government’s message that negligence and irresponsible conduct by police officials would not be tolerated, especially in cases involving women’s safety and serious crimes against children.
