The lovely tourist village of Portmeirion, in Gwynedd, North Wales is famous for its trees hammered with coins. The phrase, “money doesn’t grow on trees” doesn’t go well with this place. If you're roaming around in the forests of the UK, the sight is worth watching.
Belief and superstitions grip this tradition and its practice can be dated back to 1700s. The people living in the region believe that hammering a coin in tree trunk brings good luck and health.
People even believe that if a sick person inserts the coin in a tree, his illness will go away. If anyone tries to take out that coin, he will become seriously sick.
The tradition sounds weird and it is not clear if following this tradition actually works. But it does provide a beautiful sight in various parts of Britain. So, whenever you visit the UK next time, keep your eyes wide open.
