A few hours back, a long shootout in New Jersey left six people dead, including one police officer. "Two men fired at authorities Tuesday afternoon and began a gunfire battle that extended several blocks and shut down a neighborhood," Jersey City Police Chief Michael Kelly said.
"This started when the two men shot and killed a police officer who approached them at Bayview Cemetery in the city’s Greenville neighborhood. The gunmen fled to a supermarket where they exchanged more fire with authorities and were killed. Three other people, believed to be spectators, were also among the dead in the store."
He also added, "the killed officer was identified as Detective Joseph Seals, he is a 15-year veteran of the Jersey City force. Two other officers were also shot but escaped with minor injuries, one in the shoulder and the other in the body. They were treated and liberated from the hospital." During a news conference on Tuesday evening, Mayor Steven Fulop said, "It’s a tough day for the city of Jersey."
Officers have not disclosed the identities of the suspects or others killed at the store. Police also identified a stolen U-Haul vehicle, that may contain an incendiary device and was under inspection by the bomb squad.
The video and photographs from the scene showed a bunch of heavily armed officers from a patchwork of agencies converging on the northeastern New Jersey city, which is between Newark and the southern tip of Manhattan.
