Elon Musk-led X Disables Grok’s Objectionable Image Generation After Global Outrage
Elon Musk-led social media platform X has disabled Grok’s controversial image generation feature following widespread global backlash and regulatory scrutiny. The decision comes after the AI chatbot’s “Spicy Mode” drew sharp criticism for enabling the creation of sexualised deepfakes of women and children using simple text prompts.
In a statement issued by X’s safety account, the platform confirmed that Grok will no longer allow the generation or editing of images depicting real people in revealing clothing. The restriction applies to all users, including paid subscribers. X said technological safeguards have been implemented to prevent misuse and ensure stricter compliance with platform policies.
xAI, the developer behind Grok, faced investigations and regulatory pressure from multiple countries. In India, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) sought an action-taken report, while the Attorney General of California launched a probe into the chatbot’s practices. Additionally, a coalition of 28 civil society organisations urged Apple and Google to remove Grok and X from their app stores over concerns related to sexual exploitation and safety.
To further tighten controls, X has now limited image creation and editing features exclusively to paid users, citing accountability and traceability as key reasons. The platform reiterated that it will take swift action against high-priority violations, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) and non-consensual nudity.
In December, MeitY had directed X to remove all unlawful content without delay and enforce strong deterrent measures, including suspending offending accounts. Reportedly, X has removed nearly 3,500 obscene images in India and barred around 600 users who misused Grok. The move marks a significant step amid growing concerns over AI misuse and digital safety.
