Google accused of Android Dominance abuse in India

After facing a heavy penalty for abusing its market leadership with Android in Europe, Google is now set to face similar charges in India.

India's antitrust commission is looking into the accusations on Alphabet Inc's unit Google. Allegations on Google are that it is abusing its popular Android mobile operating system to block its rivals.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has for the past six months been reviewing a case. Google faced similar allegations in Europe that led to a fine of EUR 4.34 billion ($5 billion) by antitrust regulators last year and of the company is found guilty by CCI then it might be penalized with a much more fine.

If in case there is a penalty, it is possible that Google, just like how it has done for the European markets, starts charging phone makers for installing its specific suite of apps like Google Chrome, Play Store and even Google Search. This, at the end of the day, could result in a price hike of devices for the end consumer.
