IndiGo Passenger Accuses Airline of Overcharging Due to Inaccurate Bag Weights

An IndiGo Airlines passenger has gone viral after accusing the airline of scamming passengers through inconsistent baggage weighing scales. Rattan Dhillon, who traveled on flight 6E724 from Goa to Chandigarh, claimed his bag showed three different weights — 18 kg, 16 kg, and 15 kg — on separate belts at the airport.
When questioned, IndiGo staff reportedly told him the highest weight, 18 kg, was accurate. Dhillon says he was forced to pay ₹11,900 in extra baggage charges, including ₹1,500 for an umbrella. After reweighing the bag at his hotel, it measured 15 kg, suggesting a 2-3 kg discrepancy.
Calling it “daylight robbery,” Dhillon posted about the incident on social media, sparking widespread concern and debate. IndiGo responded, saying all their weighing machines are certified by airport authorities and regularly calibrated. The airline also said an internal review showed no issues and that the total baggage for Dhillon and co-travelers exceeded the permissible limit by 7 kg, which led to additional charges.
This isn't an isolated complaint. Earlier in January, another passenger reported a similar issue where the same bag showed different weights on two belts. A video posted online showed one reading of over 14 kg and another of just 12.2 kg.
IndiGo continues to defend its systems, maintaining that all equipment is certified, but passengers are demanding greater transparency and accountability to prevent such discrepancies.
