Major Events That Occurred In Telangana In 2019

With the year 2019 coming to an end, here are some major events that occurred in Telangana, from RTC strike to the rape-murder case of a veterinarian that had shaken the whole nation. It has been a busy year in all the terms. A seemingly unending parade of summits, crises, and protests dominated the news.

BJP Makes Inroads In Telangana

The BJP has been a big factor in this election. While the party won the urban seat of Secunderabad in 2014, this time, the party has made inroads into three seats in rural Telangana, where it was winning by big margins.

"We will win a few seats this time, and our candidates will do well and come second in seats like Karimnagar and Mahbubnagar. Though we did not do well in the state elections, the people of Telangana want Narendra Modi back as the prime minister and they will vote for him again," said A. Rakesh Reddy, BJP spokesperson from Telangana.

Since the state elections, 11 of the 19 Congress MLAs defected to the TRS, while some disgruntled leaders like former home minister D. K. Aruna switched to the BJP.

RTC Strike

RTC strike was regarded as one of the longest strikes in the history of Telugu states by the RTC workers. However, they had to make a halt to their strike with none of their strikes getting fulfilled. The 50 days long strike saw some employees killing themselves. KCR’s cold response to the strike invited criticism from various quarters. Many reminded him of the Telangana agitations that helped carve India’s youngest state.

Forest Range Officer Attacked

Kagaznagar Forest Officer, Chole Anitha, and her staff were attacked with bamboo sticks by Zilla Parishad vice-chairperson Koneru Krishna and his supporters, at Sarasala village, in Komaram Bheem Asifabad district of Telangana. Krishna is the younger brother of Sirpur MLA Koneru Konappa, and both belong to the ruling TRS.

The woman officer, accompanied by 40 Forest Department personnel and 30 policemen, had gone to take up a plantation on the 20-hectare degraded forest land.

Police Encounter On Rape-Murder Case

The Four accused in the rape-murder case of Hyderabad veterinarian Disha (name changed) in Hyderabad was killed in an alleged encounter on December 6. The accused were taken to the crime spot for an in-depth investigation of the scene when they, allegedly, snatched the weapons from the police and tried to run away. However, all four were shot dead on the spot.

While the move by Telangana police was termed brave by citizens across the country, a section also claimed the killings were extrajudicial, prompting the National Human Rights Commission to set up an inquiry committee to look into the alleged encounter.
