NASA Confirms Vikram’s Hard Landing – Pics Inside!
The US space agency, NASA has confirmed that the Vikram lander made a hard landing on the Moon and a couple of images were released on Twitter. Vikram lander has lost contact with the ground station during its final descent, just 2.1 km above the lunar surface earlier. “It is possible that the Vikram lander is hiding in a shadow,” NASA said in a statement. The high-resolution images released on Nasa’s Twitter handle and official website are now doing rounds on the internet.
The NASA orbiter will be able to see the Vikram lander better during its next flyover on October 14, which is closer to lunar mid-day at the landing site. A lunar day is equivalent to 14 days on the Earth. NASA on Friday confirmed that Vikram had a hard landing, saying “Vikram has a hard landing and the precise location of the spacecraft in the lunar highlands has yet to be determined.” If the soft-landing had happened, it would have put India in an elite group of four nations along with the US, Soviet Union and China.
“Our @LRO_NASA mission imaged the targeted landing site of India’s Chandrayaan-2 lander, Vikram. The images were taken at dusk, and the team was not able to locate the lander. More images will be taken in October during a flyby in favorable lighting,” Said NASA today.
