No Investigation On Amaravati Project: World Bank
A few days back World Bank opted out of Amaravati Sustainable Infrastructure and Institutional Development Project. Following its suit, Beijing-based Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank also said no to the project.
Now, the board of executive directors of the World bank recommended not to investigate the project. This suggestion has followed the decision of the Government of India. The Government withdrew its support of financing $300 Million to the project through International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
A request for inspection to World Bank panel was made by the landowners in Amaravati in May 2017. These owners’ land was to be used for the proposed construction of the capital city. The requestors were worried about the possible harm to their livelihood, environment and food security.
After being in constant touch with the requestors since 2017, the panel submitted their report on a recommendation to investigate the matter. But, when the bank informed that the Government has withdrawn its request for financing the project, the panel updated their last submitted report to not investigate the matter.
