PM Security Breach: Punjab Govt To Appeal To Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a petition seeking a thorough investigation into the alleged security lapses during PM Modi's visit to Punjab on Wednesday.

On Friday, the top court will take up the plea, filed by the NGO Lawyers Voice.

The plea has sought action against those responsible for the alleged security lapse and appropriate directions to the Punjab govt to prevent the recurrence of such an incident in the future.

Senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for NGO Lawyers Voice, told the Supreme Court that a security breach of such magnitude could not happen again and the matter needs thorough investigation.

"Entire documentation regarding PM Modi's visit to Bhatinda and Ferozepur should be passed to the district judge so that the investigation is not later affected," he added.

Chief Justice of India NV Ramana has asked the lawyer to serve a copy of the petition to the Punjab government.

"We will take it [petition] tomorrow as the first item," the bench, also comprising Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli, said on Thursday when the issue was mentioned for urgent hearing today itself.

On Wednesday, PM Modi's convoy was stranded on a flyover due to a blockade by protesters in Ferozepur. He returned from poll-bound Punjab without attending any event, including a rally.

The Union Home Ministry has also directed the Punjab government to file an immediate report, saying it did not require security deployment. Home Minister Amit Shah said such dereliction of the security procedure during the prime minister's visit is unacceptable, and accountability will be fixed.
