Unicorn in business software, Salesforce is buying workplace messaging app Slack for $27.7 billion to takeover Microsoft.
“This is a match made in heaven. Together, Salesforce and Slack will shape the future of enterprise software and transform the way everyone works in the all-digital, work-from-anywhere world,” Salesforce co-founder and CEO Marc Benioff said.
Meanwhile, in July, Slack filed a complaint in the European Union accusing Microsoft of illegally bundling Teams into Office 365 in a way that blocks its removal by customers who may prefer Slack.
Slack has transformed from a fast-rising startup formed as a gaming company in 2009. While it has now been a major competitor of Microsoft.
Slowly, Slack grew into a full productivity suite with video meeting features, file hosting, IT administration, and all manner of other features typically offered by large enterprise corporations.
The deal announced Tuesday is by far the largest in the 21-year history of Salesforce.
