Shahid Afridi Urges PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi to Step Down Amid Asia Cup Controversy

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has openly called on Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman and Interior Minister, to step down from one of his positions, citing the need for complete dedication to Pakistan cricket. Afridi stressed that managing two major roles is impractical, especially as Pakistan cricket faces a turbulent phase.
Naqvi, who took charge as PCB chief in 2024, has faced criticism for Pakistan’s inconsistent performances. Under his leadership, the team has struggled in Test matches, faltered in the 2025 Champions Trophy, and suffered a mixed campaign in the Asia Cup. Despite some improvement under new coach Mike Hesson, Pakistan endured three crucial defeats to India, sparking debate on Naqvi’s leadership.
Afridi, speaking to Telecom Asia Sport, advised Naqvi to either fully commit to cricket or the Interior Ministry, stating, “PCB is totally different from the Interior Ministry. Both demand time and focus. Pakistan cricket needs special attention.” He added that Naqvi’s reliance on advisers was ineffective, urging him to bring in competent cricket experts.
The controversy deepened when Naqvi, also recently appointed Chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), clashed with Indian officials during the Asia Cup. The trophy presentation turned tense when Indian players hesitated to accept the cup from him due to his previous anti-India statements. In a dramatic twist, Naqvi reportedly left the stadium with the winners’ trophy.
The incident, coupled with ongoing concerns about Naqvi’s dual responsibilities, has intensified calls for change at the PCB. As scrutiny grows, Afridi’s remarks echo a wider sentiment within cricketing circles that Pakistan requires focused, knowledgeable leadership to restore its competitive edge on the international stage.
