Indra, the most referred to deity in the Rigveda, is the god of the heavens, lightning, thunder, storms, rains, river flows, and war. As per Hindu mythology, he is also the King of Devas. He is very powerful and his powers are similar to other Indo-European deities such as Jupiter, Perun, Perkunas, Taranis, Zeus, and Thor.

In Vedas, he is king of heaven. But in the post-Vedic Indian literature, his importance diminishes. Many times, Indra has been depicted as someone who has always been insured of his throne. Devas is a tribe, along with Asura tribe and has its descent with Ikshvaaku, Yavana and Aditya. Indra is born to earth goddess Gaia and chief of Deva tribe and is destined to unit Devas and fight the battle with Asuras. He gets separated from his parents at a very young age and a sage Mitra adopts the orphan with four others.

The five friends - Vayu, Agni, Varuna, Soma and Indra, become more of brothers. After killing pishachas in a battle, they develop supernatural abilities. These abilities need to be strengthened periodically. Indra becomes the King of Devas slowly while uniting all the clans and become the greatest warrior on Earth. Indra, however, loses his lady love when he kills her brother and father, but that was the demand of the situation.

The book is gripping and the author has touched topics like coming of Aryans to India, Vedic age and the developing of Harappan civilization.
