Supreme Court convicts CBI Additional Director Nageshwar Rao
For breaking of the orders passed by the Supreme Court regarding transfer and relieving joint director CBI Arun Kumar Sharma, CBI additional director Nageshwar Rao and the CBI legal advisor were convicted for contempt of court as the court ordered that he should not be shifted.
CJI Ranjan Gogoi heading the Supreme Court Judging panel imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Rao and the advisor for violating court orders and sentenced imprisonment till the court rises.
The SC rejected Rao’s apology and said that despite two orders by the court not to shift out Sharma, Rao had shown great urgency and disregard to court orders in relieving Sharma.
Chief Justice Gogoi said that in his last 20 years as a judge he had not compromised on the dignity and honour of the court. Contempt has been committed hence a mark on Rao’s career will be happening.
Rao mentioned that act was unintentional and out of the pressure of work which led to the error of judgment on his part. It was never my intention to undermine the majesty of this honourable court, or to flout or circumvent any direction of this honourable court," Rao stated while requesting for an apology.
