Suspension Of Green Card Likely To Benefit Indians

US President Trump’s suspension of green cards or PR permits until the end of the year might end up benefitting Indians who are set to take up jobs in the US.

Trump issued an executive order suspending the same first in April for 90 days and extended the suspension till December 31, 2020.

US Law experts said that they expect advancement in the priority dates due to the green card ban allowing such immigrants in the US to apply for the final stages of the process. This is likely to help the priority dates for Indians. Immigrant experts say about 1,10,000 green cards is likely and the limit per country is 7%.

The US issues only 1,40,000 green cards for all employment-preference immigrants including family members every year. There is a backlog of 1 million immigrants and their family members who are currently living in the US and have applied for the green cards.

Indians form the largest pool of applicants in line for employment-based green cards –at 300,000 estimated applications. These are Indian nationals who went to the US on an H-1B visa and applied for PR there. The backlog for Indians is the most among all nationalities given heavy numbers and quota limits for countries.

As per rules, there is a 7% quote for Indians which comes to about 5,000-7,000 but when the numbers aren’t used by other nation people then this is allocated to clear the backlog.
