The first case of an intersex child adopted from Telangana came into highlight recently. Four-year-old, Nitya (name changed) was abandoned by her parents. But the baby has finally found a home and that too in the United States of America. Her American parents are based in Washington D.C.
The officials from the state’s women and child welfare department (WCWD), told this is the first time that an LGBTQ+ child has been adopted from the state. “The child moved in with her adoptive parents a few months ago. The mother is an analyst and father work as a middle school teacher there. Her first report from her new parents is due this August,” said an official.
The child can decide her gender and get surgery done accordingly. Her birth parents abandoned her soon after the child was born in 2015. Since then she stayed at a shelter with all the girls. “The child likes to introduce herself as a girl”, said K. Sunitha, in-charge of the adoption process at WCWD.
Joint director of WDWD, KRS Laxmi Devi said, “It is usually foreigners who come forward to adopt children who are either differently-abled or born with special needs. Indian parents, on the contrary, only want to adopt healthy children”. The department will monitor the child’s status for the next three years as per the procedure.
