Two Injured in Fireworks Mishap at Indiramma Houses Inauguration in Khammam

A celebratory atmosphere at the inauguration of Indiramma houses in Arempula village, Khammam rural mandal, quickly descended into chaos on Monday after a fireworks accident left two people injured and one woman unconscious. The event, presided over by Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, had drawn large crowds, with local Congress leaders organizing Kolatam and Dappu performances to welcome the Minister.
Trouble began when fireworks were ignited to mark the occasion. A rocket reportedly misfired, landing on an auto-rickshaw loaded with additional firecrackers. The vehicle burst into flames almost immediately, forcing people to run in panic.
Among the injured were Kolatam artist P. Shivani from Bodulabanda village in Nelakondapalli mandal and constable Balu from Tirumalayapalem police station. A local resident, Devayani, fainted during the commotion. While Shivani received first aid at the spot, Balu and Devayani were shifted to Khammam hospital for treatment.
Despite the mishap, Minister Ponguleti continued with the programme, delivering his speech, having lunch with housing beneficiaries, and later leaving for Kothagudem.
Though no fatalities occurred, the incident raised concerns about fire safety at public events. Residents urged authorities to enforce stricter precautions when fireworks are used in crowded gatherings.
